Welcome to the first edition of the VALTIP2 newsletter. VALTIP2 refers to ACIAR Project FST/2010/012 entitled Enhancing key elements of the value chains for plantation-grown wood in Lao PDR.
The overall aim of the project is to improve livelihoods for farmers and processing workers and the international competitiveness of Lao PDR wood industries through improved efficiency of key elements of the planted wood value chain.
Specific objectives of the project are to:
1. Address constraints and inefficiencies in the value chain, from harvest to processor stages, that limit returns to smallholder growers;
2. Increase returns to processors and smallholders through improved efficiencies of the primary wood processing sector;
3. Improve wood productsÂ’ value and quality for domestic and export markets;
4. Enhance competitiveness and capacity of the wood processing industries in Lao PDR.
The present project builds upon the achievements from previous project FST/2005/100, Value-adding to Lao plantation timber products, completed in 2011, which focused on building capacity and enhancing the range, quality and value of manufactured wood products in Lao PDR.
